Ada, Minnesota resident Annelee Woodstrom has written an open letter to Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley. In the letter, Woodstrom asks whether Haley remembers the elderly who have had a great impact on the world after celebrating their 75th birthday.
Woodstrom's question comes as part of her concern that older people are being forgotten in today's society. She writes that many seniors never receive a brain test but still have much to offer the world.
"I am one of those old folks," says Woodstrom, "and I want you to know that we are still here and we still matter."
Haley has yet to respond publicly to Woodstrom's letter. However, it highlights an important issue facing many senior citizens today: ageism.
As Americans live longer than ever before, it is crucial that they continue to feel valued and respected within society. Age should not be a barrier to making valuable contributions or having access to quality healthcare and resources.
Woodstrom's letter serves as a reminder that while youth may be celebrated in our culture, there is much wisdom and experience among our elders as well. It is up to all of us - including political leaders like Nikki Haley - to ensure they are not forgotten or left behind.
As for now though, only time will tell how seriously political candidates take this issue moving forward into future elections.
