Keith Reid, the iconic lyricist who cowrote the lyrics for most of Procol Harum's original songs, passed away on March 23 at the age of 76. His wife confirmed that he died due to cancer, but no details were provided regarding his location.

Reid was a celebrated writer and contributed significantly to Procol Harum's legendary status in the music industry. He collaborated with Gary Brooker, the band's keyboardist and vocalist, to create some of their biggest hits. Notably, Reid was credited as a writer on the band's most famous song "A Whiter Shade of Pale," which became an instant classic upon its release in 1967.

Apart from "A Whiter Shade of Pale," Reid also wrote lyrics for many other group classics such as “A Salty Dog,” “Conquistador,” “Shine on Brightly,” and "Grand Hotel." His significant contribution helped shape Procol Harum's unique sound that blended rock with classical music influences.

Fans and fellow musicians mourned his passing and took to social media to pay tribute. Many remembered him as one of the finest lyricists in rock history who had a profound influence on their musical careers.

In an interview with The Guardian in 2008, Reid talked about his writing process: "I can't really tell you how I write them because they come from all sorts of places - phrases I hear people say or things I read... it just happens."

Keith Reid will always be remembered for his remarkable contribution to music history through his poetic lyrics that touched millions worldwide.
