A massive fire has erupted in the downtown business district, causing widespread damage and panic among residents and businesses. The blaze started around 9 pm last night at a commercial building on Main Street, quickly spreading to nearby structures.

According to eyewitnesses, flames were shooting out of the windows as firefighters arrived on scene. The heat was so intense that it cracked nearby windows and caused some buildings to collapse.

Firefighters from several departments worked tirelessly throughout the night to contain the blaze. As of this morning, they have managed to bring it under control but are still working to put out hotspots.

Several businesses have been completely destroyed by the fire, including a popular restaurant and a clothing boutique. Many other establishments suffered significant damage from smoke and water.

The cause of the fire is still unknown but investigators are currently on scene conducting an investigation. Mayor John Smith expressed his condolences for those affected by the disaster:

"Our hearts go out to all those who have lost their homes or businesses in this devastating event. We will work closely with first responders and local officials to ensure that everyone impacted receives assistance."

Residents are being advised to avoid the area while cleanup efforts continue. Traffic is expected to be disrupted for several days while crews repair damaged infrastructure.

This is a developing story; updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
