Former President Donald Trump appeared in a criminal court in New York City today to answer charges relating to campaign finance offences. The charges stem from hush money paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the final days of his successful 2016 run for office.
Trump denies breaking any laws and has criticized the prosecutor of the case, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, accusing him of leading a “witch-hunt” against him. Despite facing felony charges next year while campaigning for the White House, he is using this court appearance as a focal point for recent fundraising efforts.
President Trump also shared on Truth Social that Bragg's office recently hired Obama White House Attorney and Biden DOJ attorney Matt Colangelo who he called "a woke and clearly crooked prosecutor". He further accused them of having "no regard for the law" and using America’s legal system as a tool to take down good Americans like himself.
“These people aren’t Americans and they aren't men of integrity," said President Trump on his social media platform, adding that they are more like "goons that helped Nazis or communists take over countries." He went on to state that these people should never hold positions in law enforcement ever again.
The case is unlikely to be resolved before the 2024 election. However, it remains unclear how this will impact his political aspirations moving forward.
