Residents of the Oakwood neighborhood in Springfield, Illinois spent their Saturday morning cleaning up a local park. Over 50 volunteers gathered at Lincoln Park armed with garbage bags and gloves to pick up litter and debris.

The event was organized by the Oakwood Neighborhood Association, which aims to promote community involvement and engagement. "We wanted to do something tangible that would benefit everyone in our neighborhood," said association president John Smith.

The cleanup effort received support from local businesses including a nearby hardware store that provided trash bags and gloves for the volunteers. The city of Springfield also sent a crew to help with disposal of the collected garbage.

Volunteers ranged from young children accompanied by their parents to seniors who have lived in the area for decades. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to give back to their community.

"This is where I raised my family, so it's important for me to help keep it clean and beautiful," said longtime resident Mary Johnson.

After two hours of hard work, Lincoln Park was transformed into a cleaner space free of littered items such as plastic bottles, cigarette butts, and food containers.

"The turnout today shows how much people care about our neighborhood," Smith added. "It's wonderful seeing everyone come together like this."

The Oakwood Neighborhood Association plans on organizing more events throughout the year aimed at improving quality of life within their community.
