The Triangle Business Journal has announced the winners of its esteemed 2023 Life Sciences Awards. Among the celebrated companies were Baebies, a trailblazer in digital microfluidics platforms for diagnostic testing and newborn screening; and Catalyst Clinical Research alongside its sister company, Catalyst Flex.

Baebies has made significant strides in technological innovation with achievements such as developing the fastest PCR (polymerase chain reaction), commercializing its glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency test, and increasing its global market share in newborn screening platforms. Key commercial partnerships combined with continued non-dilutive R&D funding from the government have bolstered this growth.

"The Triangle is an ideal area to foster industry-university partnerships," said Jane Smithson, CEO of Baebies. "Direct air connectivity to other major industrial hubs like San Francisco allows us to explore more opportunities."

Catalyst Clinical Research and Catalyst Flex also received high honors at the ceremony. The two companies offer highly customizable solutions to global biopharmaceutical industries through their established services—Catalyst Oncology CRO offerings for clinical research operations focused on oncology trials, as well as multi-therapeutic global resourcing and functional services provided by Catalyst Flex.

"Our team members have driven an impressive 84 percent increase in revenue since 2016," stated Michael Thompson, President of both firms. "We aim to reach a milestone of having 1,000 dedicated team members by year-end."

In a recent international expansion endeavor that highlights their ambitious goals for growth further still, both organizations welcomed new full-time employees based in Australia—an exciting first for each company.

As these standout entities receive well-deserved accolades from The Triangle Business Journal's prestigious event honoring life sciences advancements within North Carolina’s thriving ecosystem—their continued success is sure to leave an indelible impact on the industry at large.
