Majority of Americans support indictment of former President Trump

A new ABC News poll has found that 55% of Americans are not supporting the indictment of former President Trump, and almost half believe it was politically motivated. However, a new CNN Poll conducted by SSRS has found that 60% of Americans approve the indictment.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted after the announcement using a random national sample of 593 adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 4.4 points.

Support for the indictment appears to break along party lines, with 88% believing Trump should have been charged, while 62% Republicans say he should not have been.

The CNN/SSRS survey found that majorities across major demographic divides all approve this decision. Independents are more likely to support the indictment, while Democrats are near universal in their support.

Despite broad support for this indictment, only 37% polled said they thought Trump’s actions surrounding the payment constituted illegal activity.

A Manhattan grand jury indicted Trump on March 30 in connection to a $130,000 payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels in weeks before the 2016 vote.

The former president is set to appear in court on Tuesday for arraignment.
