California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has accused Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of signing a controversial "constitutional carry" law behind closed doors to avoid dissenters. The legislation was signed last week, but according to Newsom, it had not been publicly addressed due to its unpopularity.

Gov. Newsom and Gov. DeSantis have long been at odds with each other as polar opposites on the political spectrum – with many seeing DeSantis as a likely Republican presidential contender for 2024 while rumors swirl that Newsom may also seek a presidential bid through his newly formed organization called "Campaign for Democracy." However, he denies these speculations.

The contentious law allows Floridians to carry concealed firearms without obtaining permits and follows the tragic murders of three children and three adults at Nashville elementary school in March this year.

Despite widespread opposition from various groups within Florida - including Republicans - Gov. De Santis released an official press release celebrating the new law stating, “Constitutional Carry is in the books.” He warned that there would be consequences for opposing such actions by adding: “There will be serious repercussions if you try to block something so many people are against.”

A recent survey conducted by the University of North Florida revealed just how unpopular this measure is; only 21% expressed support statewide while an overwhelming majority opposed it strongly or somewhat – even among GOP respondents who made up 62% opposition rate within their party ranks alone.

In another instance showcasing their contrasting views on governance and policy matters alike: earlier this month during a speech held at Ronald Reagan Presidential Library located Simi Valley California., Governor.Newsome criticized Democratic strongholds embracing what he referred as ”woke ideology”.
